The Taliban abolished the growth of poppy in 2001. Most Afghans lost their jobs while those under the rule of the Northern Alliance flourished. Ever since the Northern Alliance took over Kabul, opium production has more than doubled.

When Soviets pulled out of Afghanistan, the drug war spiraled out of control with drug lords fighting for control. The Taliban fixed this.
When the Taliban banned the growth of opium, global prduction dropped by 19%. Ever since the end of the Taliban, Afghanistan produces an estimated 4,000tons of the estimated 6,000 tons of opium made annually.
