Results Of The Soviet Invasion: - Afghanistan was forced under Taliban rule - In 1992, They captured Kabul, Afghanistan - By the late 1990's the Taliban had control over most of Afghanistan (a Council of Ministers ruled the country) -The Taliban imposed there strict rules that had to be followed. ~ Banned TV (and most forms of entertainment) ~ Had rules for dress and grooming ~ Women had to cover themselves completely if they went out in public ~Men had to have beards ~Etc. - The Taliban Destroyed a lot of the artifacts in Afghanistan because there were " anti-islamic" ~Many works of art ~ Two statues of Buddha carved into a mountainside - Drought in Afghanistan left many Afghans on the edge of starvation - After 9/11, the U.S and our Allies (including the northern alliance) began a military campaign against the Taliban and Al Qaeda
Cause Of The Soviet Invasion: - In 1953, Muhammad Daoud Khan took control of the government and made himself prime minister, he later resigned because of border tension (In 1963, with Pakistan) - Afghanistan was now ruled by Zahir Shah, later Daoud led a revolt and overthrew Zahir then in 1978 Daoud was overthrown by Nur Mohannad Taraki (a left-wing military officer) - The PDPA (Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan) had split into two other parties, the people's (khalq) party and the Banner (Parcham) party - Then when the new government which was not very popular forced Afghanistan to be close to the soviet union. This new Government caused the mujahideen, were islamic (rebels, rebellions),uprise - The internal fighting in the Government between the Banner and Peoples parties prompted the soviets to invade (In 1979) -The soviets invaded with 30,000 and killed people's leader Hafizullah Amin, and headed Banner leader Babrak Karmal as president.
