Fibro the adult male mouse clone Unlike Dolly and the numerous other, less famous, mouse, sheep, goat and even cow clones that research has produced from female adult and embryo DNA over the past few years, Fibro was made from cells taken from an adult male animal. Furthermore, previous clones were produced from cells harvested from various parts of the reproductive system such as mammary or ovarian cells. Fibro, on the other hand was made from ‘ordinary’ cells.
Just as in all the other cloning experiments to date, the researchers had a very low success rate. About half of the DNA-swapped ova divided to the point where they could be implanted into a ‘mother’ mouse and only 3 of these 274 implanted embryos reached full term. Of these three, only one, Fibro, survived to become a fertile adult male.
In 1952, the first animal, a tadpole, was cloned. Before the creation of Dolly, the first mammal cloned from the cell of an adult animal, clones were created from embryonic cells. Since Dolly, researchers have cloned a number of large and small animals including sheep, goats, cows, mice, pigs, cats, rabbits, and a gaur
In a large percentage of cases, the cloning process fails in the course of pregnancy or some sort of birth defects occur, for example, as in a recent case, a calf born with two faces. Sometimes the defects manifest themselves later and kill the clone.
