The Jungle, written by Upton Sinclair, was just one book written in an attempt to show the harmful practices of business. Other people who used writting to expose harmful ways of business, also known as "muckrakers", were: Lincoln Steffens, Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Samueal Hopkins Adams.
"In 1900, women had struggled to win the right to vote for more than 50 years." Women had also fought for their rights during the Progressive Era. Jane Addams and Carrie Chapman Catt, along with the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), used protests and other methods to push for women's rights.
Labor unions used strikes as a way to better the workplace as well as earn higher wages and lower work hours. The companies exposed their workers, and striking was a way to get back.
"Tweed took over New York's Democratic Party..." Political machines, such as Boss Tweed, made a big impact on cities. The immigrants were given a good life in return for a vote, and whoever was voted in usually used wrong business practices. The Progressive reformers moved to stopped political machines from having so much power.
PROGRESSIVE ERA (1890's-1920's)
"A hundred thousand people lived in rear tenements in New York." Tenement housing has overcrowded an very dangerous. People that lived in these houses varied, but were mostly immigrants and lower class people. The Progressives moved to increase the standard of living and help the people living in these tenements.
The three Progressive Presidents (Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson) worked towards the reforms the people wanted. They all made laws and ammendments that helped achieve what the Progressives wanted. They Regulated big business with government while keeping the idea of capitalism alive.
