Galileo Galilei
Galileo was born February 15, 1564, and died January 8th 1642. He was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution.
Galileo is famous for many different things including: improving the telescope, and discovering mountains on the moon, moons orbiting Jupiter, and sunspots.
The Catholic Church was not happy with his believings. The Pope called Galileo and forced him to publicly abondon his beliefs. At first, Galileo followed the Pope's rules, but soon began to defend his findings and beliefs. He was then kept under a watchful eye for the rest of his life.
This is the page that Galileo first noted an observation of the moons of Jupiter.
Galileo also created a military compass and a thermometer.
It is said that Galileo became blind because of the combination of cataracts and glaucoma. However, many believe that he became blind from using his telescope to look at the sun.
His discoveries with the telescope revolutionized astronomy. They also helped paved the way for the acceptance of the heliocentric system.
