Kenya's Independence
1963
The Mau Mau War put an end to the hopes of white settlers for independence under the white minority rule. As a result of the Mau Mau, the British government began planning for Kenyan independence under majority rule. Kenya received its independence in 1963.
The Mau Mau freedom fighters awaited President Kenyatta’s signal to overrun the white settlers and win their land back, but Kenyatta disagreed. He told the new nation, “Hakina cha bure.” This means “nothing for free”. He urged the Mau Mau to “forgive, but don’t forget”.
A man named Jomo Kenyatta became the prime minister. A year later, Kenyatta became president when Kenya became a republic.
