The Minister's Black Veil
Question: Why do you think Parson Hooper is so ademant about wearing his veil?
"'How strange," said a lady, "That a simple black veil, such as any woman might wear on her bonnet, should become such a terrible thing on Mr. Hooper's face!'" (Hawthorne 340)
"Such was its immediate effect on the guests that a cloud seemed to have rolled duskily from beneath the black crape, and dimmed the light of the candles." (Hawthorne 341)
The black veil that the story describes the kind usually associated with grievance. This would imply that Hooper has lost something important to him. Perhaps his faith?

It is obvious in these Puritan times that the inhabitants of the village are skeptical about almost everything. They weren't very acclimated to change and having their preacher walk into a sermon and preach it with this black veil on is nonetheless disturbing. And of course anything slightly off is a sin...
