The Tide Rises,The Tide Falls Crashhh
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow February 27, 1807 – March 24, 1882
Facts -The poem has meter.Meter is a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. -Longfellow lived near splashing waves in Portland,Maine.Which is probably the reason for the main focus of the story(the tide). -The poem not only talks about the rise and the fall of things, but its rhythm rises and falls. -To avoid a sing song effect, the poem has spondee. In spondee, the iambic meter is off by pairing two stressed syllables. -With the exception of Robert Frost,Longfellow was and is the most popular poet. -Both of Longfellow's wives died. One in a miscarriage and one was caught on fire. -The poem describes Nature's cycles and the cycles in a human life. -After losing both wives,Longfellow was very relighiusly influenced in writing his poems. -Longfellow was fuilly devoted to writing for seven years, before his second wife died.
Criticism Longfellow is fascinated with the German literature and language. He had many experiences in Germany, which invigorated his natural Puritanism. German family life, social customs, and floklore, influenced Longfellow's writing. Longfellow's role in American literature is not only dependant on the value of his poetry, but the influence of the times. Longfellow is both rejected for his simplicity and greatly accepted.
