The Five Major Religions
Buddhism
By technicality , Buddhism is not actually a religion, but more so a collection of beliefs based on how to go about in life. Buddhism is believed to have started around 563 BC in present day Napal. Siddhartha Gautama is the most renowned ''prophet''. He is known as ''The Budda''. Important texts include the Pali Canon and the Tibetan Canon
Christianity
With Catholicism being the largest denomination and the second biggest religion worldwide, Christianity started in the year 1 A.D. by Jesus Christ, the major prophet and Son of God, in Jerusalem. Major books include the Bible, probably the most famous book in history, which is made up of the Old Testament and the New Testament., and the Ten Comandments. Practices include attending mass every Sunday, praying every day, following the Ten Commandments, and following the Beatitudes.
Hinduism
Hinduism is the predominat religion in India. It is the third largest religion and has no known founder. The exact time it was founded is unknown too, but historians believe that it is the ''oldest living major tradition.''. There is no set prophets either leaving the interpretation of the teachings entirely up to the follower. Althought Hinduism does have scriptures, including the Shruti and the .Smritis. Hindu's have many practices such as yoga, puja (basically prayer), singing devotional hymns, and meditation
Islam
Althought the Islamic people believe in the same God as the Christians, the Muslims are not Christians. Thought they do believe in Jesus Christ, he was only a great prophet to them, not the Son of God. Instead Muhammad is the major prophet, who was reveled by God the Qur'an the Muslim Bible. The religion of Islam is believed to have been started in 613 A.D. in Mecca. Islamic traditions include prayer five times a day, fasting, following the Five Pillars, and acepting the ''Jihad'' (holy war)
Judaism
The original Children of God, Judaism started with Abraham, whom was told that his decendants would be as numerous as the stars by God. From Abraham came Isaac, Jacob/Isreal, Moses, Solomen, King David, and eventualy Jesus Christ. Jews view Jesus as a great prophet, much like the Muslins, but not the Son of God. The most important doctrine of Judaism is the Torah and the Talmud. While Jewish traditions include bar/bat mitzvah's, daily prayer, pillgrimages to the Weeping Wall, and they also do not say the word ''God'' out of reverence.
