Bound by Donna Jo Napoli
Fairy Tales/Realistic. Middle School, High school Level. Age 14+ I would recommend this book to people who like fairy tales and people who are sympothetic.
-Foot binding is a custom practiced on young girls and women for approximately one thousand years in China, beginning in the 10th century and ending in the early 20th century. -Foot binding was considered beautiful and the feet of Chinese women would grow to be 2.5 inches at the biggest. -In the 1990s and early 2000s, some elderly Chinese women still suffered from disabilities related to bound feet.
Xing Xing ; The main character has a very strong persona. She may look weak and scrawny but mentally she is very strong. She lives as the family servant after he father's death but she learn to do what she wants to get where she wants to be.
Setting- Napoli continues her tradition by placing the Cinderella story in a specific time and place: the seventeenth-century Ming Dynasty in northern China. By doing so, Napoli is able to combine actual history with fairy tale elements to create a rich and emotionally complex novel.
Now, Where Have I Seen Her Before? I think the book itself is very related to Cinderella because Xing Xing does the opposite of what Cinderella would do and she does what she can to do what she loves and perfects it to become to woman she wants to be. As Cinderella went against he stepmother's words to not go to the ball, Cinderella went anyways. For Xing Xing, her stepmother specifically said only to do housework and to serve but secretly Xing Xing practices pairing, art, and calligraphy because he father taught her that those were the most important and valuable skills to have in life.
