Scientific and Common Name-Thalassemia
Symptoms-none in mild cases but symptoms of anemia appear in more serious cases including weakness, fatigue, lightheadedness, jaundice, weight loss and no appetite
Thalassemia
Caused by a defect in one or more genes that has been passed down from both parents to the child.
Treatment depends on severity. Mild cases do not need treatment, moderate and severe cases can be treated with folic acid and blood transfusions, but severe cases will also call for a splenectomy and sometimes a bone marrow transplant.
Multiple blood transfusions often creates an excess of iron, which may damage organs if untreated. Going through with proper treatment plans will make the symptoms decrease in severity.
