The Lone Ranger and Tanto Fistfight in Heaven
By Sherman Alexie
The theme for this book is no one should give up on something no matter how hard life gets. Through out the book, Alexie demonstrated this through Victor. Victors life was hard from the beginning. From both his parents being alcoholics, to the struggle of over coming alcoholism.
Alcohol can cause a lot of problems in someones family. In the book The Lone Ranger and Tanto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie, he demonstrates how alcohol can destroy someones life through the characters Victor, Adrain, and Jimmy. Both of Victor's parents were alcoholics. They would fight, drink, pass out, and then do it all over again: ''Victor climbed on the bed and lay down between them. His mother and father breathed deep, nearly chocking alcoholic snores.'' (9) Victor was young at the time and even at a young age, thought about drinking and alcohol. He sometimes had dreams about it too. As Victor got older, he went from basketball hero to a recovering alcoholic. Victor and his friend Adrian claim the new basketball star of the reservation will start to drink as well, just like everyone else that lives there. '' 'Hey' Adrian asked, 'Isn't that the Windmaker boy?' Julius Windmaker, the best basketball player on the reservation, even though he was only fifteen years old. 'He looks good.' Adrian said. 'Yeah, he must not be drinking.' 'Yet.' '' (45) People on the reservation assume that when someone isn't drinking, they will very soon. Alexie claims people can recover from alcoholism but my opinion is it really depends on the person. I believe alcohol can destroy people's lives but they have the power to turn their lives around. But it's all on their own. No one else can make them recover
