Grandfather is loyal to his family, he cares for them and he enjoys spending time with them. Grandfather lives with Shabanu and Phulan. He is really old. He tells stories about his past to Shabanu. He fills in Shabanu’s mind with information that will help her in life. But he gets caught in a tragic sand storm and dies.
Guluband is the strongest camel, which belongs to Shabanu’s family. But Dadi sold him at the Sibi fair which made Shabanu really angry at Dadi. For that, Dadi gave Shabanu Sher Dil which is a puppy. Shabanu felt better and forgave Dadi. By Dadi selling Guluband, they made a lot of money.
Dadi was born in Cholistan. He is married to Mama and has two daughters: Shabanu and Phulan – Phulan is thirteen and Shabanu is eleven. At one part Dadi wrestled with a guy showing his other side. We think that the author is making the readers foreshadow to show us that Dadi might be fighting for a future husband for Shabanu.
Shabanu is and eleven-year-old girl, who is watching her sister Phulan, grow up. She is an interesting and curious person. She loves her family, her dog Sher Dil, her camels, Phulan and the desert. In one year she will be married to Murad, Hamir’s brother who will marry Phulan! Shabanu is very wild just like the wind and she can not imagine herself living in one place for the rest of her life! Also she will have a hard time being away from her parents Dadi and Mama.
