Defining literary terms
Direct Characterization- when the author simply tells you what the cahracter is like. Climax- the most intense part of a story Conflict- the argument or problem in a story Symbolism- Using a character or place to represent something else Setting- the enviroment were the story takes place Flashback- when the author inserts a part of the story that happened before at some point Irony- when something happens that you would think woudn't happen like someone breaking into a police station Theme- the main idea in the story Simile- when the author compares two unlike things Metaphor- when the author uses a phrase or term to compare two things Forshadowing- when the author gives clues to what will happen in the future Hyperbole- an obvious exaggeration Rising Action- the incidents that lead up to the climax Falling action- the resolution of the conflict Dialogue- the conversation between two characters
