Jane Eyre
Foreshadowing: Bertha Mason once escaped from the attic one night and set fire to Mr. Rochester's bed. No one was hurt, but later in the story, after Jane leaves Thornfield, Bertha Mason gets loose again and sets fire to the entire manor. Mr. Rochester is badly injured, and Bertha Mason is killed. Foil: Rosamond Oliver is a foil of Jane Eyre. Miss Oliver is described as having a "face of perfect beauty," but she seems silly and not very bright. This is the exact opposite of Jane's character. Symbolism: Mr. Rochester locked Bertha Mason, his mad wife, in the attic where she couldn't do any harm and he could pretend she didn't exist. This is symbolic for the secrets that everyone has, secrets that can be extremely harmful if discovered and are best kept hidden.
Jane Eyre is:
plain
stubborn
insightful
Intelligent
Imaginative
Theme: Intelligence is more important than beauty because beauty is often empty and decieving.
"You are cold because you are alone...You are sick; because the best of feelings, the highest and sweetest given to man, keeps far away from you. You are silly, because, suffer as you may, you will not beckon it to approach; nor will you stir one step to meet it where it awaits you."
"(my mind) felt the one point where it stood-the present;all the rest was formless cloud and vacant depth: and it shuddered at the thought of tottering and plunging amid that chaos. "
